To try, try, try’s sure trying
I’m broke, but I ain’t been broken yet
Hard, hard, hard, well hardly
I’m down, but I’m master of my mess
If there’s one thing I know it’s true, tears they’re for clowns
Up, up, up, up standing
Unbound, boy I ain’t bound to budge
Bar, bar, bar, bar none
Hours to waste, but not to judge
If there’s one thing I know it’s true, tears are for clowns not fools
So wipe away them drops of ridicule
Toss ‘em on the side there by the rules
Step on towards the laughter and you’ll be a Smilin’ Fool
If there’s one thing I know it’s true tears are for clowns not fools
So wipe away them drops of ridicule
Toss ‘em on the side there by the rules
Step on towards the laughter and you’ll be a Smilin’ Fool

Behind The Song...
Smilin' Fool
I was inspired to write this song listening to Chris Berardo's, "Ignoring All The Warning Signs" while living in Seattle, WA. Chris and I had been friends since we played the Cellar Bar in Larchmont alternate weekends in the ’90’s. Whenever he or his brother would make a mistake they would say they were my band. There was even a summer Marc moved away and I played his role in the Desberardos. Chris' never say die attitude and dream chasing demeanor I find inspirational. He remains a true outlaw as I straddle both of my worlds...the arts and "Practical Matters". I know many of the people look upon artists as a bit "clownish" as their pursuits are not always easily quantifiable in tangible terms. I prefer the “fool” to the “clown” as the fool I see as a bit more stable and carefree enjoying his role entertaining people. No one talks of the "tears of a fool".
"Smilin' Fool" developed out of the idea when you take a 10,000 foot view in the comedy/tragedy we call life, we are all just “clowns” or “fools” in our absurd march towards death...so joyfully participate regardless of your path and ultimate fate....be a “smilin’ fool”.
As I worked and reworked the song I removed the original ending of the second verse seen below which contained a direct reference to Chris (from Rye, NY) and JD Salinger's "Catcher In The Rye", with the use of "Holdin’ on", a Holden Caufield reference.
"If there’s one thing I’ve learned livin’ its the Catcher’s out of rye not minutes
Holdin’ on for what tomorrow brings me. Holdin’ on to make it rhyme and ring see. Wipe away the drops of ridicule, I’m a smilin’ fool"
Lastly, I am of the same mind as Jimmy Webb, as communicated by his book “Tunesmith”, the use of "fool" in songs should be suspended...unless it is used in an uncommon way.
